This fascinating and historic building hosts a variety of events for all tastes, as well as being fun to explore, either on your own or in a guided tour. You can see regular artillery displays (hear the guns roar!), attend expert talks , or experience one-off events like the NASA Museum of the Moon, a Victorian Family weekend, model exhibitions, and special Halloween events – the fort is reputed to be haunted!
You can take your own picnic to eat while admiring the panoramic views of Portland and the Jurassic Coast, or eat a freshly prepared snack or cake at the Fort View Café. On a rainy day, the rooms and passages inside the fort are home to a fine museum, with displays, films and exhibits to explain the history of the place, which was first constructed in the 1860s to protect the adjacent harbour.
